It’s a warm Monday morning in October. It’s early and I’m on the way to London for work on a slow running train. The biggest event of the year happens tomorrow and I need to be on my A-game. I’ve chosen to wear a pair of my favourite Sweaty Betty leggings. Finally I reach my destination and stomp down the platform with confidence until…BOOM! I see myself in a shop window. The reflection of doom. Panic sets in.
OMG my legs look huge. Are these appropriate? Will people think my legs are fat? How’s the camel toe? What’s my boss going to think? I’ve made a terrible mistake.
But then the mist of self doubt lifted, a beam of gratitude hit me and I thought about all the things my legs have done for me…
Kicked inside my mums womb Stumbled their first steps Skipped into school for the first time Walked away from University with a degree Ran from pain and hurt Rushed into relationships And straight back out of them Skipped through sunshine filled fields with friends Danced all night Strolled all day Walked down the aisle Stepped over the threshold Pushed heavy weights Carried heavy burdens Crumbled under pressure Stood up to bullies Stood up for myself Stepped back from things that didn't serve me Jumped feet first into what did Travelled the world Stood on mountains Swam in rivers, lakes and seas Danced in the moonlight Walked on Caribbean sands, through New York City streets, through the temples of Ancient Greece, and to wonders of the world I hope they take me to new worlds and old haunts To the side of friends in need That they carry children of my own for 9months and their whole lives They will stroll through life with my love until we part They will walk me into new experiences and away from loved ones for the last time That is what my legs have done for me.
